17 Days To Go!

I like you, but only a little...

Picture of I like you, but only a little...

Twelve years together… and it all began when we were twelve.

Even though we lived on opposite ends of the same block, fate decided to keep things interesting—splitting us into two different elementary schools. Shelby went to Beck, and Zachary went to Duncan. We wouldn’t cross paths until the very first day of junior high.

Shelby still remembers stepping onto the bus that morning—something she was already used to after taking it in sixth grade for first-hour math. She slid into a seat in the middle, greeting her now–8th grade friends. The next stop was Zachary’s. He stepped on wearing a purple polo (a classic, if you knew him back then) with his signature, impressively spiked hair. Shelby remembers whispering, “Who is that?” But that was all—no introductions, no conversation. And to make it worse… Zachary never rode the bus again. In true bougie middle school fashion, he always managed to get a ride in either a Cadillac or a Chrysler 300.

It wasn’t until state standardized testing that they finally interacted. Thanks to alphabetical order—Failla next to Fenn—they were assigned seats beside each other. Everything was going smoothly until Zachary’s phone went off. A mutual friend immediately tattled on him, and Shelby, little goody-two-shoes that she was, instantly decided he must be trouble.

Time went on, and in second semester they reunited—this time in a class called Innovative Presentations. Again, assigned seats put them side-by-side. They shared a mutual friend, Maria, who admitted she thought Zack was cute. Shelby, who was far too busy to imagine having a boyfriend, volunteered to be Maria’s wingman. So for the first few weeks, most of their conversations were actually about Maria… with Shelby dropping not-so-subtle hints on her behalf.

They exchanged numbers (a shocking turn of events considering Zack texted and Shelby… did not respond). Thinking she wasn’t interested, Zack didn’t push it. But the more they talked, the more comfortable they became. And one day, during a class presentation, Shelby tripped over a chair—and before she hit the floor, Zachary caught her. A quick dust-off, a red face, and they pretended nothing happened. At that age, even hugging was awkward.

Still, neither would admit they liked the other. And then, in the same class, a friend named Dylan asked Shelby out right in front of Zack. She looked at Zack for some kind of reaction… and he stared intensely at his computer screen, pretending not to notice. She turned Dylan down anyway, but left thinking Zack must not be interested.

Summer arrived, and they barely saw each other—until Zack’s best friend at the time, Nick, had a mid-summer birthday party. One harmless party turned into a full-scale food fight, and Shelby made it her personal mission to nail Zack with a cupcake. Later, during a handstand contest, Zack tried to hold her legs to help. Not knowing about Shelby’s very real acrobatic skills, he received a stern: “Let go.”

That night, they both left thinking… maybe they liked each other. Still, neither said anything.

At the end of the party, Shelby announced she was walking home. Another kid offered to walk her—despite it putting him two miles away from home. Shelby accepted, a little bummed Zack didn’t offer. Meanwhile, Zack knew his mother would’ve rather grounded him for life than let him wander the neighborhood in the dark for a girl. He tried texting her again afterward… but again: radio silence. (In fairness, if you know Shelby, this tracks.)

They didn’t see each other again until the start of 8th grade, when they landed in Life Skills together—Failla and Fenn, once again side-by-side. They picked up right where they left off, this time with a little more flirting. Zack showed up with a broken arm and a blue cast, empty on one side—the perfect blank canvas for Shelby to write her name in giant letters. He’d ask to feel her Dutch braids; she’d ask how he spiked his hair. One day, he even playfully tugged the zipper at the bottom of her leggings. (Creepy? Maybe. On-brand? Absolutely.)

And suddenly, Zack stopped asking his mom to pick him up. He started riding the bus home instead. They never sat together, but Zack always sat behind her. Every once in a while they’d both reach for the back of the seat and their hands would accidentally touch. Instantly red faces. Instantly avoided eye contact. But from then on, they were best friends.

(Important life lesson: do not ask Shelby to be your wingwoman.)

They still didn’t admit how they felt, but constantly asked who the other liked. Finally, Shelby cracked first. “I like you… BUT ONLY A LITTLE BIT,” she blurted out in a text—just in case he didn’t feel the same. Zack responded in identical, equally defensive fashion.

On the last day of the semester, the dismissal bell rang. Zack’s heart was pounding when he pulled her aside and asked her to be his girlfriend. Shelby said “yes,” eager to get the moment over with. Their teacher, Ms. Chambers, witnessed the whole thing.

And just like that: they became Zachary and Shelby.

What Zack didn’t know was that Shelby had every intention of breaking up with him that night—not because she didn’t like him, but because she wasn’t sure she was ready for a boyfriend and didn’t want to hurt his feelings in public. Later that day, in the JC Penney parking lot, Shelby told her mom what happened. Her mom was thrilled, immediately asked to see a picture, and said how cute he was. Shelby realized she was far too young to have an ex, and with her mom’s gentle encouragement, she decided to give him a chance.

And thank goodness she did.

Twelve years later, that tiny decision—made by two two best friends full of nerves, innocence, and absolute middle school chaos turned out to be one of the best decisions of both of their lives.

They’ve grown up together, celebrated every milestone side-by-side, and blended their families long before they ever planned to. They built a life that feels like home, starting long before they ever knew the word for it.

And now, they’re finally getting married.

A full-circle moment, twelve years in the making.
